Welcome to the 2008 edition of Waterside, the showcase of the communities that stretch from Anacortes, the San Juan Islands to Fairhaven and Bellingham in Washington state up through White Rock, Ladner and Tsawwassen in British Columbia back down to Point Roberts in Washington again.
In these days of record-breaking gas prices and overcrowded airplanes, it’s nice to know that such world-class attractions lie so close to hand. And what will you find? Friendly faces, for one. Each area is informed by the culture and background of its inhabitants. Richmond and Steveston, for example, benefit from a heavy Asian influence while Blaine and Point Roberts still show traces of their Icelandic background.
And even though the environment ranges from rural to urban, some features persist through the region. Views are spectacular, as is the wildlife. Located on the Pacific Flyway, birdlife predominates. Especially keep your eyes open for eagles and Great Blue Heron. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot Orca whales while near the water.
All of the towns have a heavy schedule of fairs, festivals and events so be certain to check our calendar of events before you visit. There are discoveries waiting to be made around every corner and going slow makes it more likely that you’ll catch that ‘once in a vacation’ moment!
